Halogen vs. LED-Spots

[ back ]

What you should pay attention to!

1) The transformer / the power supply

Do you want to install a 12V or 230V system or replace single spots by new LED equivalents? Many manufacturers and resellers often ask not to use electrical transformers. We think this is not exact enough. Please read below the guideline for 12V spots:

Please do not run these (not dimmable) spots in electric circuits with unregulated electronic power supplies beacuse they often cause stress peaks that might lead to damage or even destruction of the spots. Do only run these spots with conventional transformers with an output voltage not higher than 12V AC (50Hz). The manufacturers and we do not grant any guarantee or warrantee for defective parts that are backwarded on incorrect use.

These complex guidelines for 12V systems are the reason why we recommend customers who build in a complete new spot system to buy only the 230V versions. You save the costs of the transformers and their own energy consumption.

2) Attention:

Fluorescent LampsPlease make sure that no fluorescent lamp is running in the same electric circuit than the 230V LED spots do. The high voltage that is used to ignite the fluorenscent lamps might be released to the circuit sometimes and may cause stress peaks which might destroy or damage (degrade) the spot(s).

Matchableness of halogen- and LED spots

1) Emitting properties

Halogen spots have very good emitting properties on a 360° vector. As light emitting diodes are adjusted parts because if their design they are exclusively emitting forward. That causes a bunched light because of the different viewing angle of

- 15-30° of 5mm LED-spots
- 40-60° of high power LED-spots

The light within this viewing angle is enormously bright but decreases rapidly to its outer limits. To reach a homogeneous illumination we suggest to mount the spots with rollover couns of light. Please also read the below mentioned remark regarding the point of use.

2) Watt is not power!

If you visit your favourite building center and buy a 20W halogen spot you have a clear imagination of the brightness this spot will emitt. The wattage of 20W does only mention the power the spot needsto get 100% of the spots brightness. This is often misunderstood and even wrong explained the the end customers by so called 'trained' stuff. Please do never think that a LED spot with at least 1-3W could realize the brightness of a Halogen spot. The wattage is only important to define the power consumption.

Further should be mentioned that the most 3W LED spot do not consump only 3W. The standart power consumption is at 4-5W. Why? Because the LED spot uses only a 3W LED! If you use a 12V spot with 350mA it will have 12 x 0.35 = 4,2W. That is not such a big difference but you should know about that!

3) Illuminating power

You will have to use more than one LED spot to get the same efficiency of a halogen spot. A replacement formular of 1:1 is not solid and not yet possible on basis of the actual LED generation.

Since the beginning of 2007 new 3W high power LED spots are available on the market. They have a real viewing angle of homogeneous 60° and are almost similar to a 20W halogen spot. A very easy to use system. If you want to replace 50W halogen spot you should use our Plug & Light LED units because a standart LED spot would not stand the extreme heat very long. The Cree and Seoul plug & light kits went extremly strong the past months. Try it!

Dupery and confidence tricks

LED spots get used more and more and that increases quotient of scare articles, too. Self-appointed experts offer obvious scare goods. They use aggressive slogans that shall spark your interest. Of course all dealers do that but you should know what this is all about:

5mm LED spots:

1) Mirrored/Chromed PCBs
There are LED spots that come with a nice optical appreciation where the PCB is chromed or mirrored. That has nothing to do with more brightnesse, longer lifetime or different illumination. It is simple a gag because the LEDs emitts straight up.

2) Chromed refelctors
please also look 1)

3) 100.000h lifetime
The lifetime is always an extrapolated value. If a manufacturer would wait up to 100.00h to launch a produkts the market would be far away from this generation. A common high quality LED reaches 10-50k hours depending on the type and color. If somebody tells you about 100.000h go and find another store!

4) No heat emittance
That is absolutely incorect. Every LED emitts heat and additional electronic parts do the same. But heat is really no problem if the heat management is ok. The sector of thermal management is very wide so give us a call if you need more informaton.

High Power LED spots:

1) 3W LED spot
As mentioned above many resellers do not even know which technic is mounted in the spots. Calculating any amortization data is therfore waste of time.

2) ...Spot with hyperbright LEDs...
This is a imaginary word so be careful! Of course we all know words like ultrabright and superbright too but these were innovated by LED manufacturers and still have a meaning. Hyperbright does not say anything. You maybe buy a pig in a poke!

3) ...Brightness up to xxxlm...
Our light measurement laboratory and technical universities tested a wide range of spots. The best ones just had the half of its praised brightness.

4) Comparisons to 5mm LED spots
Dubious resellers often compare 5mm LED spot, 1W and 3W high power spots where the self sold spot wins. These kinds of comparisons are unserviceable because they do not mean anything because these are 3 different technics. A stupid try of kidding customers.

5) Questionable comparisons/packings
We often read AS BRIGHT AS A 20W HALOGEN LAMP. Ask the dealer for detailed measurement data.

6) Wrong product presentations
Many resellers trap with a detailled nice looking cost benefit analysis on wrong data basis. Most dealers do not even know what they are writing there. Get an alternative opinion.

Which LED spot is the best for my application?

1) Starting from the point of use

a) Do you want to realize accented lighting for
- kitchens
- deco objects
- display windows
- showcases
as auxiliary light sources? Then you should use the common LED spots with 5mm ultrabright LEDs. But if you want to light up

b) complete rooms, buildings and areas

the common LED spot might be the best choise because of the above mentioned narrow viewing angle and coun of light. A wrong or not homogeneous illuminated room doesn't come across very inviting. For this reason you could use the high power LED technic.

These illuminants need a bit more power and get warmer but provide much more light (up to 240 lm and more). This costs a little bit more of course. Current prices and lead times for the lastest generations only on request. Thank you very much.

2) Starting from the distance to the object

It is often a question of the distance between the illuminant and the object that make the choise of the right illuminant a little bit easier. LED spots with 5mm LED are cheap and perfect for short and middle ranges (0.1 - 2.0 m). If the object is more far away or the room is accordingly large you can better you the high power LED technology.

The technics - Advantages and disadvantages

1) Spots with 5mm LEDs

combine all advantages of the LED technology: Luminous efficacy, low power consumption and low evolution of heat. Please do not follow the fairy tale of the 'light emitting diode that does not build up heat'. People claiming such thing are apparently unskilled. LEDs and compact applications like spots are getting warm in enduring use up to 40-45°C but high quality LEDs do not get damaged.

2) Spots and applications with high power LEDs

often meet with citicism of keen protectionists of the 'standart LED'. The light efficiancy is enormous but power does always need a source. The power consumption of 1-20W of each power LED is equal to a few full mounted LED spots with 18-20 5mm LEDs. But the biggest problem is the fast and correct reduction of biuld-up heat.

The 1W version doesn't get much warmer than common 5mm LED spots but the higher versions get much warmer. You must absolutely take care to take away the heat from the LED beginning from the first second of use. In every other case you will not have much and long fun with your high power LED illuminats. But don't worry: Just send us an email with your illumination project and let us solve the problems together!
